The Tale of Dinky: A Small Story about a Small Creature

~~ Instead of funny foto friday, I have a cute li'l story for you. I hope you like it. ~~

The other night I opened my closet to find a mouse staring back at me.  “Eek!” I squealed appropriately.

Matt and I talked about it, and decided that instead of killing it, we would catch it and release it into a nearby field.  Matt devised a contraption to catch the animal. The photo you see above is not the first contraption he conceived of. We tried a few modifications which all centered around the idea that the mouse would be lured to the end of a precariously balanced object and fall into a bucket where it would not be able to escape until we freed it.

Several nights passed during which the mouse, whom we named “Dinky,” succeeded in eating the bait, but not tipping the piece of wood into the bucket.  Matt thought the mouse must be outwitting us.  But I thought that it was probably so full from eating the trail of chocolate Matt had left, that it didn’t even bother eating the last piece of chocolate.

Whatever the explanation was, it seemed that Dinky was not to be caught in Matt’s con-trap-tions.   A local hardware store recommended the Havahart trap, a humane way to catch animals.  They come in all sizes, whether your quarry is a dog, an armadillo or a chipmunk.

You put the bait inside the trap, and as soon as the animal enters it, the two doors on either end slam down, and it’s caught inside.  We set it up that night.

Early the next morning, before I opened my eyes, I became aware of a soft, metallic rattling sound coming from the closet. Sure enough, Dinky was in the trap, trying to find a way out. We all trooped over to a field about a mile away and released it. (It ran away so fast, there was no chance of getting a photo.)

Ironically enough, Dinky has none other than Ozzy, the hamster to thank for its freedom.  Before we adopted Ozzy, we  might not have thought twice about using the old-fashioned killing trap.  Having Ozzy in our family has made us more sympathetic to the small animal kingdom.

Who knew that hamsters could save lives?

Oh my...that is an adorable story. And, squeal! Look at the hamster!!!! My mom has trouble right now with river rats, as they live on a little river called the Zumbro. I convinced her to use those traps you used and just take them further on down the river to release. My dad reminded me that the farm where I directed them to release the rats has an abundance of feral and barn cats...oh well, nature's way : )

What a great tale!! I've been waiting for you to write something! You are much nicer than I!! I am 100%, absolutely, and completely TERRIFIED TO DEATH of mice!! I want them GONE at any price! But still a part of me is happy for you that Dinky made a clean getaway! However, if you can't pinpoint how Dinky got in and seal it, you are likely to have other visitors in your closet! I'm getting goose bumps and freaked out just thinking about it!! Gotta go! Great story Helen!!

That's a great story - your hamster is so sweet! But remember where there is one mouse - there are usually more !

LOL....You may not believe this but I used the same method in our previous house.......We had a mouse that was coming up from the downstairs [which was our fault also] and he was under our kitchen sink. I tried the bucket and stick contraption and he did not fall for that at all. Sadly our tenants downstairs trapped them and killed them [there were 3] after they walked through their sons Birthday Cake !!!!! They found little footprints in the cake ..........It was our fault because a week before we removed an old pipe in their apartment and forgot to patch up the hole !!!! We have such a problem here because they are getting into my basement and no matter how many times I outsmart them they outsmart me......I have a humane trap but not the have-a-heart one [need to get one] mine is a bit harder to use.....But I've caught a few and they are aways White footed mice [deer mice] and I released them at the nature center in the woods .....Lory's right you have to find where they are getting in and close it up but it did make for a very cute and sweet story.........One last thing please everybody don't use those horrible glue traps they are SO inhumane !!!!!!
Awwww such a great and cute story =D your hamster is so sweet!

Little Ozzy is so cute and adorable. Lovely story, I'm glad you didn't kill it. My theory on life is that every has a right to live, it's not their fault that they are mice or rats, or spiders or whatever. I would implore anyone not to kill them, but please catch them humanely.
